New Radio Theatre

New Radio Theatre is a weekly radio show that is broadcast on KCNR out of Redding, CA. They've run several of ARTC's recordings in the past, mostly our live material, and now they're hosting a friendly competition amongst the various radio theatres around the country!

Each writer could submit one or more radio plays to the contest and now the time has come to vote for the winners. ARTC is being represented by two of our newest and best writers with distinctly different styles.

Kelley S. Ceccato has submitted Sarabande for a Condemned Man, performed live at Dragon*Con 2011. (Hey, that's this podcast!)

Sketch MacQuinor has submitted The Game is Afoot! Game the First: The Adventure of the Phantom Chippendale, performed live at STEAMfest 2011, featured on the podcast on May 13, 2011.

Administrative trivia

I've been working on making this blog a complete index to the ARTC Podcast, since the blogging software that LinSyn uses doesn't quite lend itself to that. This is just to let you know that I'm making progress, and the end is in sight.

If you were to, say, click on the name "H.P. Lovecraft" over there to the right, you'll now find "The Call of Cthulhu", the live version of "The Shadow Over Inns mouth", and "The Colour Out of Space"!

Speaking of "The Colour Out of Space", if you've been eager for a CD-quality release of this performance, well... Keep an eye on us. That's all I'm allowed to say just now.

The blog at Gravedigger's Local 16 has given a favorable review to Special Order / A Case of Abuse (buy it from ARTC or Audible), and of course we're extremely grateful.

Correction of a factual error:
The physical disc release of Special Order / A Case of Abuse is not a CD-R. It's a "real" glass-mastered factory-pressed CD, as is most of our catalog. We do market some of our releases on CD-R, but they are labeled, since we're aware some older disc players don't like to play them. We frankly hope most of our listeners will purchase a download from Audible (or iTunes or Amazon), just because storing the physical media and fulfilling mail orders are almost more troublesome and time consuming than actually producing the program.

The reviewer is certainly correct that “ultimate evil implies ultimate good” doesn't exactly fit H. P. Lovecraft's literary point of view, which is that the universe is greater than humans can understand and attaches no particular importance to human life. The intended point was that one view is really no easier to believe or disbelieve than the other, and blending the two had not, to our knowledge, been tried. We were amused at the thought that some of our listeners might be more upset by the suggestion that the religious concepts might be valid than by the implications of the nightmarish Lovecraftian world. That that battle might be going on over our metaphysical heads and (generally) taking no notice of us might be the most horrifying idea of all.

Before we get to the main event, however, we are proud to bring you our first ever interview to the ARTC Podcast, this time with Claire Horne of CORE Performance Company.

CORE Performance Company is our Partner in Imagination for our upcoming performance of The Dancer in the Dark. Partners in Imagination is ARTC's initiative to spread awareness of what is possible in a collaborative community. By channeling the energies of non-profits into common goals, ARTC hopes to raise awareness of various causes through the magic of radio.

A hodgepodge of bridging, commercials, random comments, and other bits of flair that give each of our shows its personality but don't make much sense out of context. Some of them are fake, some of them are ad libbed, but the ones about us needing help are totally true.
ARTC is growing. we're still an all-volunteer organization, but our message of quality audio drama is spreading and we want you to be a part of it. we welcome virtually everybody, but we're particularly looking for the following:

Painters and Illustrators (for posters and product covers)!
Audio engineers for live performance, studio mixing, and archiving!
and, of course, we love writers and actors! The more the merrier!

Beam Piper ahead of his time again

A key scene in Ron Butler's adaptation of Piper's "Time and Time Again" features the line: "I do not believe there is anything in the Pennsylvania Code defining an offense along the lines of 'lending an object that looks like a pistol.'"

101 - A Tribute to Brad Weage

In this episode of the podcast, we pay tribute to the memory of Brad Weage, longtime composer and friend to ARTC and its members, who passed away on August 22, 2010 from complications of double pneumonia.

Brad composed many of the themes for our serials including Rory Rammer, Space Marshal, The Brotherhood of Damn Sassy Mutants, Mildly Exciting Tales of Astonishment, and The Jane Handley-Page Show. He also lent his talents to our feature-length studio works including The Passion of Frankenstein, The Menace From Earth, The Doom of the Mummy, and Solution Unsatisfactory to name but a few.

He performed live with us often. If you ever heard ARTC live, there's an excellent chance you heard Brad. If you heard us live more than once, it's a virtual certainty.

100th Podcast Episode!

We made it! 100 episodes of ARTC's Podcast. Y'know, we really need a catchier name for this thing. If you have an idea for a great new name, send it on to podcast@artc.org.

But we digress.

For the 100th episode, we knew we had to bring out all the stops, come up with something so spectacular that it would blow everyone away and leave everyone talking about how we could possibly top it. Unfortunately, we didn't get permission to use it, so we went for the next best thing (and set ourselves up for an awesome episode 200) and went with our Dragon*Con 2000 performance of Rory Rammer, Space Marshal: Queen of the Spaceways.

Not only is Rory Rammer one of our most popular and requested series, but in this episode the role of Rory Rammer is played by none other than Ted Raimi! Joining him in this star-studded cast are Alexandra Tydings and Claire Stansfield!

Don't touch that dial: the threat to radio drama | Television & radio | The Guardian

The reason, of course, is cost. At £23,000 per hour, the BBC spends on radio drama about one 40th of what it might pay for an hour of television. Hampton's White Chameleon is a marquee production for Radio 4, and yet there are no White Chameleon baseball caps, no Dionysian trailers, no egos being massaged (no time). Gather its entire cast and crew together, and you would not have enough people for a football match. This, BBC bosses argue, is why Radio 4's main evening slot, the Friday Play, will cease to exist from next year; it was either save there, where the audience is smallest, or cut everything else beyond the bone.

Welcome to the media ghetto, British Audio Drama. You'll find it well populated.

Jeez. £23,000 per hour. (That's a touch over $35,000 in "real" money. *ahem*) The Atlanta Radio Theatre Company, in over 25 years of producing award-winning radio drama, hasn't spent that much money altogether. We'd shoot a puppy -- well, maybe in the leg, only to wound -- for $35,000.

I did find it a bit startling to learn that Susal Loewenberg, the head of L.A. Theatre Works, isn't a big fan of the genre.

You're thinking, yeah, yeah, seen it before. It isn't that hard to do. You select an area and desaturate the color in that area. It seems to be a lot of folks' favorite image editing trick. But that's not what's going on here.
If you follow the link back to her Flickr photostream, you'll see several other angles on the same people, including one taken for the San Francisco Chronicle. It's a gray Santa suit, a gray wig, gray body paint, and gray contact lenses. you have to get really close in to see the only color she couldn't cover, the pink corners of her eyes.

BEAVERTON, Ore., Nov. 16 (UPI) -- A 96-year-old photographer in Oregon said he decided to plan and hold his own wake prior to his death so he could attend the event.
Hugh Ackroyd, 96, said he held the wake for family and friends Sunday at the Beaverton home of friend Edda Sigurdar, The Oregonian reported Monday.
"Well, why not?" Ackroyd said of leading his own wake. "Why bother when (I'm) dead?"
Ackroyd, a father of two whose wife died about 12 years ago, sat in his padded wheelchair and greeted his friends as they arrived for the event. He said one of his favorite items at the wake was a wreath bearing a ribbon reading: "Eventually, Hugh, rest in peace."
"It's quite magnificent," Ackroyd said of his wake.

Folks, by now you all know about all the stuff I usually post here and the links go on for several posts, so I'm not going to repeat them again this month. I just want to thank everybody for another (almost) year of great podcasting and appreciation of audio drama. The fact that you're still listening makes it all worth it.

We've got one more podcast left for this year, in December, and then it's off to 2010. One goal I'd like to try to achieve for the coming year is more interaction with our audience. What do you want to hear from us? How can we improve? There's lots of changes coming and we've got some interesting ideas, but we want to make sure we're doing the right ideas and changing in the right ways.

Last December, the above-referenced production of That Christmas Play went before the boards, although according to Mark Evanier it might have been better to have the boards go first and let the play follow as best it could.

Ya wanta know the topper? The same producer is trying to put it together again this year as a road show (as if the technical and mechanical problems will be easier to fix in a different venue every two or three performances), but two of the six planned cities have not booked yet, and a third just cancelled.

Atlanta Radio Theatre Company

The popularity of radio theatre waned with the advent of television, but a group of actors, writers, and sound technicians in Atlanta is maintaining this largely forgotten art form.

The Atlanta Radio Theatre Company (or ARTC, pronounced “Art-see”) has entertained, amused, thrilled, and terrified audio drama enthusiasts since 1984. Although specializing in horror and science fiction, ARTC shows its mastery of the art and craft of audio drama in any number of genres. Bill Ritch, the group’s president, says the appeal of radio theatre lies in the storytelling tradition. ARTC is just spinning a spooky tale around the campfire, so to speak, but with sound effects!

ARTC shows have been featured on a number of radio stations in Atlanta, but currently the best way to experience them is via CD or podcast. Or, for the full-on ARTC experience, you can attend one of their live shows at Stage Door Players in Dunwoody. There, you can see just how they craft their sound effects and manipulate microphone placement to achieve their atmospheric audioscapes and create adventures in sound.

Experiences worth having generally come from the addition of creative inspiration.

Cthulhu Tuesday - The Wrong Medium

Every now and again, I do a web search for "Lovecraft news", just to see what comes up. Among the finds this time were these DVD reviews:

H. P. Lovecraft's From Beyond
Regina Leader-Post

Sporting cheap and often laughable special effects, this film presumably expected to horrify people with its alien-like creature bursting through a skull and other "scary" special effects. But even by 1986 standards, the effects are fake-looking, as are the blood and guts that are scattered liberally through the film, and it's considerably less scary than it is funny.

...Entirely forgettable, From Beyond has little to offer other than laughs at its campiness, and a reminder of how low-budget filmmaking by those with higher aspirations looked, back in the day.

H.P. Lovecraft's the Tomb
REEL ADVICE

I resolve to never again knowingly write about anything that Ulli Lommel does.

Lommel's The Tomb defies explanation. He's locked a bunch of people in that all-too-familiar warehouse set of his and let them run around in a vaguely Saw kind of atmosphere as they try to accomplish the ludicrous task of figuring out why they're there in the first place and the much more rational task of trying to get out alive.

I'd like to recommend that you forego these gems and try an audio-drama adaptation of H. P. Lovecraft's works. The special effects in your own mind are much better than anything Hollywood can build.

Modesty forbids me from pointing out that one popular source makes its latest live production, The Colour Out of Space, available for free download.

And if that one satisfies, there's a five-part adaptation of The Shadow Over Innsmouth featuring author (and gifted actor) Harlan Ellison, also for free.

Welcome everyone to the last Christmas podcast of the year. We conclude the season with another very recent show, Sunday, December 23 to be exact. And we are proud to bring you a segment of An Atlanta Christmas that has never been presented before. "Civil War Triptych", written by Thomas E. Fuller, follows the Christmas stories of three characters, each with an entirely different situation and take on the season.

Again, technical reasons prevented me from including the performer's names in the audio, but they are Clair W. Kiernan, Veronica Byrd, and Jeff Montgomery. Assisting with the song at the end are Dawn Marie and Sarah Taylor. Special thanks to our performance coach, Doug Kaye.

Back in 2001 we performed an adaptation of Robert A. Heinlein's Solution Unsatisfactory. As you might expect, we were very proud and excited to present a work by such a well-regarded author. And since it was written in 1941 we were already aware that Mr. Heinlein had seemingly seen the future of world events by predicting the use of atomic weapons, although in a different form.

Little did we realize how memorable this performance would become. Performed live on August 31, we planned studio time for September 12, 2001. Needless to say we moved this production up in the queue.

Guest starring in this production are Peter David and Lisa Getto.

Welcome to part three, the final chapter of our 2001 Dragon*Con performance of Guards! Guards! by Terry Pratchett, adapted for audio by David Benedict, featuring John Rhys-Davies as Lupine Wonse.

I hope everyone has been enjoying hearing this as much as I enjoyed adapting it. Being able to share it with a mass audience has brought back a lot of the enthusiasm I had when I was working on the project originally. I occasionally felt as though I were summoning dragons myself as I constructed them out of pure sound.

As part of this production, ARTC made a donation to the Orangutan Foundation International, an organization dedicated to the preservation of the orangutan and its natural habitat.

Welcome to part two of our 2001 Dragon*Con performance of Guards! Guards! by Terry Pratchett, adapted for audio by David Benedict, featuring John Rhys-Davies as Lupine Wonse.

As I mentioned last week, the adaptation for this production was particularly difficult. It is a full-length novel, rich with character development, humor, plots and subplots, and is considered by many to be a fine starting point for those wishing to get into the Discworld series. When compressing it down into an hour, most of that stuff had to go out the window. When we read the first draft it took over two hours and we didn't finish. That's when I knew I had my work cut out for me.

For those of you who have read the original book, I agonized over the scene with the prospective dragon hunters who were all complaining about how you don't get respect from monsters anymore and how one monster's mother actually came round to complain after he was killed and his head put up over the door. For those of you who haven't, don't think this adaptation even begins to cover the depth of this book. Read it.

As part of this production, ARTC made a donation to the Orangutan Foundation International, an organization dedicated to the preservation of the orangutan and its natural habitat.

53 - Guards! Guards! part 1

Wow. It's hard to believe we've been podcasting now for one full year. Fifty two podcasts have come and gone and now we're starting on year two, and we're starting it with a really special one.

Back in 2001 we received permission to perform Guards! Guards! by Terry Pratchett at Dragon*Con. Furthermore, we were very privileged to have John Rhys-Davies play the role of Lupine Wonse When the performance was over we thought that was it...a copy of the recording was sent to Mr. Pratchett, but other than that we thought it would remain locked in the vast, cavernous ARTC archive vault.

But then we started podcasting. And so I wrote to Mr. Pratchett and asked permission to distribute the recording and happily he agreed.

What you are about to hear, in three parts, is something I will always be proud of. I worked very hard on the adaptation, and believe me, cutting a novel-length book down to an hour is hard work, especially when you have an attachment to the material like I did.

I'd like to thank Mr. Terry Pratchett for permission to do the adaptation, performance, and the podcast. I'd also like to thank the late Thomas E. Fuller for his assistance with the adaptation. And I'd like to thank all of you for helping us reach one full year of podcasting, with hopefully many more to come.
